I am noticing more and more that guests at a restaurant will smile during their meal then leave nearly no tip for the server at the end of the meal as a "that'll teach you". But what are you teaching them? What was wrong? Was there an issue with the food or with the service? Did you want a different drink or was the desert melted?
The problem is not that the server wasn't tipped; servers live off of tips, they go out of their way to make sure they get a tip. The problem is the server doesn't know until after the meal that there was a problem. If the server knows during the meal, then they can fix it; get a new meal or drink, free desert, more napkins etc.
Both myself and my co-worker were the only ones working on the patio today. Every table was full and we were running everywhere, it was tough but we thought we did a very good job. We asked each table how they liked the food, if we could get them anything else and checked up on them periodically, and STILL each of us had a table that didn't tip us- so obviously there was a problem.
My co-worker got a 0% tip bill. That's tough, but at least you can assume the guest thought the tip was included in the bill.
I had a much weirder situation. I had 1 table with 2 bills. 1 guest tipped me close to 50%, AMAZING. The other guest tipped me 63 cents... WHAT!? Polar opposites, and absolutely no idea why.
Please, if you have an issue while you are at a restaurant, tell your server. You don't have to tip them well at the end of the night, but let them try to fix it for you. Let them know what needs improvement and let them explain what's happening, otherwise there's no productivity.
